After an appointment, it is easy to remember the general advice but forget important details. Leave a few minutes to sum up so that things do not become confused. Repeat what you have understood in your own words and ask the doctor to correct any inaccuracies. This is a normal part of shared decision-making.

If a test is suggested, ask what question it is intended to answer. Clarify any preparation, how you will get the result and who will explain it. Do not assume that no telephone call automatically means a normal result: agree on how you will hear back in advance.

If treatment was discussed, ask about the expected benefit, possible unwanted effects and available alternatives. Note how long to follow the plan and which changes to look for. Do not change prescribed treatment simply because an online description differs from what your doctor said.

Agree separately on where to seek help if your condition worsens or you have new questions. Save the relevant contact and the date of your next appointment. Ask for a written summary if needed: it can help you recall the conversation without relying entirely on memory.
