Replacing a missing tooth: comparing the options offered

After losing a tooth, you may discuss removable appliances, bridges or implant-based options at a consultation. But a price list does not determine the best choice for an individual. Your mouth and expectations need to be assessed first.

Explain what causes the most difficulty: chewing, speech, appearance or discomfort from an existing appliance. Describe previous experiences and the care you can realistically provide. These questions are as practical as the colour or name of a material, because a replacement must work in everyday life.

Ask how the options compare in stages, timescales, limitations and follow-up visits. Clarify whether preliminary treatment is needed and what the total price includes. Do not treat an estimated duration as an unconditional promise: further assessment or fittings may change it.

Before treatment starts, agree on how comfort will be checked and what adjustments might be needed. Note the instructions for care and reviews. A suitable choice depends on an understandable plan and your circumstances, rather than only the advertised name of a replacement method.
