What to discuss at a routine dental check-up
No independent medical review is claimed. UKRMED editorial policy
A routine dental check-up is an opportunity to discuss your teeth and gums before significant discomfort develops. Start by mentioning changes since your last visit: sensitivity, unpleasant sensations, difficulty chewing or questions about everyday care.
The dentist may ask about your general health, medicines and habits relevant to your mouth. Prepare this information and explain earlier treatment if you are seeing a new professional. Show existing images or reports, but the need for additional investigations is assessed separately.
If the dentist identifies a problem, ask for a clear explanation and to be shown what needs attention. Discuss the available options, the sequence of treatment and an approximate cost. Examination and treatment may need separate appointments, so agree on what will happen today.
Do not set yourself a universal check-up schedule simply because friends recommend it. The frequency of visits depends on your oral health and individual risk. Before leaving, agree on the next visit and note the care recommendations relevant to your own situation.
