A tooth treatment plan: questions before treatment begins

Before agreeing to treatment for a tooth, it is important to understand the procedure's purpose as well as its name. Ask the dentist to explain the problem identified and the options being considered. A photograph, diagram or demonstration in a mirror may help when a verbal explanation is not enough.

Clarify how many stages are planned and whether temporary restoration may be needed between them. Ask what determines the final plan and whether further assessment could change it. Different treatments have different purposes, so do not choose solely by the shortest name or a price on a list.

Discuss expected benefits, limitations, possible risks and alternatives. If several materials or restoration methods are offered, ask how they compare for your particular tooth. Clarify what the price includes and which later stages cost extra rather than leaving financial questions until the end.

Before leaving, note how to use the tooth until your next visit and how to contact the team if problems arise. Revisit any unclear explanation before the procedure begins. Informed consent starts with a clear plan, not pressure to quickly agree to an unfamiliar term.
