Preparing a child and parents for a paediatric appointment

Preparing for a paediatric appointment starts with a short explanation to your child of where you are going. Explain calmly that the doctor will talk, ask questions and examine them if needed. Do not promise things you cannot know in advance, or use the visit as a threat for bad behaviour.

Make your own list of the main questions and events you would like to discuss. Think about when your child's health changed, what happened beforehand and how they behave in familiar situations. Bring existing medical records and the names of any products already used, if relevant to the visit.

During the conversation, let your child answer for themselves if they feel ready. Parents can add information without speaking for the child throughout the appointment. If your child is anxious, tell the team and ask whether the examination can follow an order that is more comfortable for them.

Before leaving, check that you understand the plan: what to observe at home, when to expect results and how to contact the doctor. Write down what you have agreed and keep it together. A short summary will help at the next visit more than trying to remember every remark.
