Your first family doctor appointment: how to prepare

A first meeting with a family doctor helps build a complete health history. Before your visit, identify your main question: what is troubling you and what you hope to get from the conversation. If you have several questions, put them in order of importance so you can start with the most significant.

Bring a list of the medicines, vitamins and supplements you use, including names and doses. Separately note any known allergies, previous operations and important illnesses. Earlier reports and dated test results may help if they relate to the reason for your visit.

Describe how you feel in specific terms: when changes started, how often they occur and what they prevent you from doing. You do not need to find medical terms yourself. The doctor needs your observations, rather than a diagnosis found online or suggested by friends.

Before leaving, clarify the next step: whether you need further tests, how to receive the results and when to return. Ask for unfamiliar words to be explained and briefly note what you have agreed. A well-prepared appointment is a shared discussion, not a test of the patient's knowledge.
