Root canal treatment: questions to ask your dentist

Root canal treatment aims to remove infection inside a tooth and allow its subsequent restoration. Whether it is needed is decided after assessing the tooth. If this option is offered, ask why it is recommended and how it relates to your symptoms and examination findings.

Clarify the approximate number of appointments and the sequence of stages. A final restoration may be needed after work inside the canals, so it is important to understand the whole plan, not just the first appointment. Ask about any temporary seal between visits and how to look after it until treatment is complete.

Discuss pain relief, possible sensations afterwards and signs that should prompt you to contact the team. Mention previous reactions to treatment and the medicines you take. Do not judge your situation by a friend's individual story: the complexity and condition of the tooth may differ substantially.

Ask for written follow-up instructions and the date of the next stage. Clarify how the outcome will be assessed and whether review is needed. Restoration and follow-up decisions concern a particular tooth; a promise that every treatment lasts the same length of time cannot replace an individual explanation.
